Narrative
I have organized my Portfolio by the appropriate tabs for ease of access, with a section for "Home," "About," my "Statement of Integrity," my "Resume," the "Narrative" page you are on now, and the "Artifacts" page that outlines how I met the goals for this Portfolio using assignments from the six core classes.
Throughout my time in this MLIS program, I have taken a wide plethora of classes that I feel have been preparing me for my future career as an LAM (Libraries, Archives, and Museums) Professional. I have taken the core courses and have found them exceptionally educational, but I have also taken electives that focused on Graphic Novels, Young Adult Novels, Materials for Children, Genealogy for LIS Professionals, and GIS for LIS Professionals. I have strived to take a variety of classes so as to dabble in the areas I could potentially work in the future, and I am happy with the skills I have learned overall in this program.
Not only in the six core classes but especially there, I have found this program to be slowly but surely preparing me for a job as a LAM Professional. The six core classes were LIS5020 Foundations of Library and Information Science, LIS6271 Research Methods in Library and Information Science, LIS6409 Introduction to Library Administration, LIS6511 Collection Development and Maintenance, LIS6603 Basic Information Sources and Services, and LIS6711 Organization of Knowledge I. Outside of these six core classes, I have also found the elective courses LIS5937 Rare Books & Special Collections, LIS5120 Cultural Heritage Institutions, LIS6565 Young Adult Books and Materials, and LIS6577 Graphic Novels to be very useful in building my knowledge and understanding about the field of Library and Information Science.
Leadership & Innovation
To meet the goals of Leadership and Innovation, I utilized assignments from the core courses. My Digital Archives Research Proposal from LIS6271 met the I.a goals of problem solving individually and collaboratively, as I worked with a group to tackle the issue of literacy in Digital Archive research. My Reference Librarian Interview from LIS6603 met the I.b goals of effective communication skills, as I was able to successfully interview a Reference Librarian. Next, the Community Needs Assessment on the Pruitt Campus Library from LIS6511 meets the I.c goals of active participation in community engagement activities in the field, as I prepared a full Needs Assessment which included surveys and interviews that would be conducted on patrons and staff. Lastly, the LIS5020 assignment Diversity of Ideas in Library and Information Science met the I.d goal by demonstrating leadership and innovation in a diverse environment, as I discussed strategies to promote diversity and equity of access in libraries.
Systems & Services
For the Systems and Services goals, I also used assignments from the core courses as well as some elective courses. The II.a goal of identifying and analyzing diverse information needs of individuals and communities was met using the Strategic Plan Evaluation on Orange County Public Library from LIS6409, as I created a specific plan for the Orange County Public Library. Next, the LIS6577 Community Demographics and Graphic Novel Recommendations assignment meets the II.b goals of evaluating and selecting information resources and systems to meet the needs of patrons, as I was evaluated demographic data in St. Lucie County, Florida and made graphic novel recommendations based on the data. Additionally, the ll.b goals were also met by my Queer Historical Romance Novels for Young Adults Book Guide assignment for LIS6565. Finally, the II.c goal of understanding and using appropriate information technology for information services was met with my Identifying and Categorizing Metadata assignment from LIS6711, where I identified elements and information for The Godfather movie.
Knowledge & Representation
For Knowledge and Representation, I was able to meet the III.a goals of analyzing, organizing and describing various forms of information objects with the LIS6711 Mastering Library Classification Systems Assignment, where I analyzed and identified sources from different library catalogs. The LIS6711 Compiling a BIBFRAME Record assignment met the III.b goals of identifying and applying the best practices in the use of different technologies for knowledge representation, where I showed mastery in creating a BIBFRAME Record Text.
Theory & Praxis
Finally, for the goals of Theory and Praxis, I was able to use the LIS6271 Qualitative Research Article Review for the IV.a goal of describing applications of qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, as I reviewed and analyzed a qualitative article in a professional manner. Next, to meet the IV.b goals of identifying opportunities for research and developing plans for research in an applied setting, I used the LIS6711 assignment The Patron Experience Using Digital Archives, where I discussed the necessity of making digital archives more user-friendly, and easier to use for regular, everyday patrons.
I strongly feel that these assignments I completed throughout the course of my time in this MLIS program help me show my mastery of the required goals for this Portfolio. With these assignments, I have been able to work both independently and with a group of other students (for the Digital Archives Research Proposal) and I have finished each assignment feeling more confident in my skills as a future Library Professional. I hope to use all of these skills and more to be a competent, successful Library and Information Science professional.
